Regenerating degraded lands on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica
The Nicoya Peninsula Reforestation Project is a large-scale, 50-year initiative to restore 13,500 hectares of degraded pastureland in one of Costa Rica’s most ecologically critical regions. Using native species, the Project aims to regenerate tropical dry and humid forests to consolidate and expand a 65,000 hectare biological corridor throughout critical watersheds that were heavily deforested by cattle ranching in the 20th century.
This Project aims to:
Sequester ~8 million tons of CO₂ over the first 20 years
Support biodiversity by restoring one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems: tropical dry forest
Create local jobs in forestry, monitoring, and education
Return 70% of Carbon Removal Unit (CRU) revenue directly to the local economy, including schools
Improve watershed health, reducing erosion, and enhancing water quality
By partnering with organizations such as The Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeepers, Nicoya Peninsula Foundation, CIRENAS (Research Center for Environmental and Social Resources), and more, this project not only advances Costa Rica’s nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement but also establishes a scalable model for climate finance, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable rural development.
